Comment:
Spirometra spp plerocercoid larva or sparganum unstained whole mount showing calcareous corpuscles. This was in the subcutaneous tissues of a human host -- an accidental secondary host for a cestode of the Spirometra spp of f. Diphyllobothriiddae which has as its definitive host cats and dogs, the first intermediate host is the cyclops, second intermediate hosts are fish, birds, reptiles and occasionally humans. Humans are infected by eating raw or undercooked fish flesh containing sparagana (plerocercoid larva).
